Dementia and the power of music
The value of music in helping people with dementia is supported in the latest research undertaken by 2020 Research, in association with Spirit of Creation, a consultancy which aims to improve public services.
The research involved residents in a range of care homes across the UK, who were living with dementia. The residents had a live performance from singer songwriter Beatie Wolfe, and then over the next few weeks listened first to her music, and then to music from other artists.
There was a clear and immediate response to the performance, with residents becoming more alert and moving with or humming along to the music. Communication and memory skills both improved over the next two weeks.
The results give strong encouragement to care homes to integrate music activities into their daily programmes, and there may be considerable value too for those living with dementia in their own homes.
